Leading by Giving: Historical Exhibition of Chinese Philanthropy in Melbourne

7 January – 4 March 2015

Through photographs and manuscripts, this exhibition explores the philanthropic contributions of Chinese Australian communities both within Australia and in China.

The Chinese Museum also brings out a number of collection items, which had never been on display before, to support this exhibition, ‘Leading by Giving’, on loan from the Asia-Pacific Centre for Social Investment and Philanthropy at Swinburne University of Technology and the Kuo Min Tang Society of Melbourne.

Curated by Dr Mei-fen Kuo, this exhibition was inspired by the discovery of a significant collection of records relating to the operations of the early Chinese Consulate-General office in Melbourne. This treasure trove of material, which dates back to 1908, was found during renovations to the headquarters of the Kuo Min Tang Society of Melbourne in Market Lane, off Little Bourke Street a few years ago.
